Evaluating the suspected eating disorder

Often, to diagnose and cure eating disorder medical professionals from different medical areas are involved, for instance physicians, psychotherapists or nutritionists.Today’s treatment methods for anorexia and bulimia nervosa involve different means and procedures that can be compared with certain subtypes of these pathologies.

The evaluation methods of patients’ state with eating disorder usually consist of:

Clinical interview;

Self-monitoring procedure;
Laboratory and instrumental study methods.

The diagnosis of eating disorder is the main purpose of the clinical interview. The purpose of clinical interview is that a doctor should learn the clinical picture of a disease and its diagnosis criteria.

The self-esteem questionnaires allow specifying and dividing into groups the information on symptoms of eating disorder and its comorbidities.

The self-monitoring procedure is carried out by a patient himself, serving as a base for the correction of his eating disorder. Both a patient and a doctor get an extra information from the self-monitoring procedure.

From a scientific point of view, the laboratory and instrumental methods of study of dietary habits allow to reveal the causes of the disease and choose an optimal method of treatment. Diagnostic tests and procedures help to evaluate the functional systems of the body objectively.

Advanced evaluation methods of patients’ state with eating disorder, allow to get a general picture of a disease in vivo and avoid some extra actions on controlling the body weight (for example, induced vomiting, use of diuretic or laxative drugs).
