Diagnosis of obesity in children

Overweight and obesity always cause certain consequences on physical and mental state of children. Thus, in order to obesity does not harm a child’s health, a timely diagnosis and treatment are required.The diagnosis of obesity causes in children includes several steps:

  1. Medical examination
  2. A talk with a child and his parents
  3. Additional tests

Medical examination helps to diagnose obesity and reveal the severity of the disease. BMI is an index showing the obesity severity in adults. In children, obesity is diagnosed by means of special tables, indicating age, height and other factors.

When talking to a child and his parents, a doctor should find out whether or not a child has a disease or any symptoms of it. The doctor might need some information on chronic diseases of parents or their relatives. In addition, the doctor should know about family’s lifestyle and food preferences.

To eliminate the obesity causes, some tests may be prescribed. Laboratory tests allow the doctor to determine carbs and lipids metabolism level in a patient’s body. Before prescribing a treatment, the doctor should estimate the function of liver and other internal organs.

By determining the level of proteins in the blood plasma, the doctor can estimate the liver state.

Biochemical blood test allows estimating the levels of triglycerides, glucose, cholesterol and other substances that cause accumulation of fat.

Additional tests can be taken in children, who have high blood sugar levels. Blood sugar tests determine the tolerance to glucose. If the blood sugar level is above normal, this might be the symptom of type 2 diabetes.

  • In cases of suspected endocrine diseases, the doctor can prescribe some blood and urine tests, to check the hormones.

For instance, hypothyroidism is characterized by low level of thyroid hormones. In this case, a patient might need to consult an endocrinologist.

MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) and CT (computed tomography) are recommended for children if adrenal or pituitary disorders are suspected. An ultrasound of internal organs is a binding medical test.

Obesity is often accompanied by many disorders in patients of any age. Some diseases may require to visit cardiologist, endocrinologist, gynecologist, urologist, gastroenterologist, ophthalmologist and other medical specialists.
